"Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. Matthew 14:18-19

New Zion encourages its members to actively participate in community activities especially, when centered around benevolence and spiritual enrichment. Most of our ministries are involved in some way with the larger community, whether it’s evangelism, support for health causes, spiritual encouragement for the incarcerated, assistance to needy or assistance to physically handicapped. SNAP, Lydia Dorcas and SHARE are three examples of our community involvement and opportunities for for members and friends of the church to contribute to the overall welfare of the community.

![]() June Robb ![]() Join us for fun, fellowship and community service Quilting, Afghans and more.... The Lydia Dorcas Creative Sewing Circle was established, in April 2006, as an outreach ministry of New Zion. It is named after two women found in the Bible. Lydia (Acts 16:9-15) and Dorcas (Acts 9:36-39). The objective was to unite a group of people to create lovely handmade items and donate them to community service organizations. The circle supports and donates: lap quilts and afghans to friends in the community who are homebound, nursing homes, Williamsburg Hospice and Sentara Hospice; crib blankets to FISH; Fleece hats and scarves for children to AVALON; Christmas pillows to nursing homes; pink hats, pink booties and pink stoles to friends in the community with breast cancer who are receiving chemotherapy and local oncologists to give to other survivors; crochet hats for premature babies and crochet bereavement sets to neonatal nursing units. The Circle is eager to accommodate special requests such as creating pillows made with patriotic fabrics for the VA Hospital. Members of the Circle make regular visits to nursing homes. There is not a requirement for circle members to know how to sew or to be a member of New Zion. There are several no-sewing projects and instructors are on hand for all projects. We welcome friends in the community to participate. The only requirement is that you must be eager to learn and willing to sacrifice your time to the benefit of others. We meet on 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. To join the circle call the church office ![]() |

“But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43-45
The SNAP Job Search Assistants are (L to R): Elwood Bland, Bernice Perkins, Connie Heyward, Ron Heyward, Alice Alexander and Vivian Bland ![]() ![]() In April 2008, New Zion was designated a Share Network Access Point (SNAP). SNAP, sponsored by the Department of Labor and the Peninsula Worklink, is a faith-based community organization located in neighborhoods or communities where people can go to look for jobs and other career development services. At New Zion, our SNAP staff members are called Job Search Assistants (JSA), and we provide all of the services listed above. Since the New Zion SNAP has been operational, we have helped numerous clients search for jobs that match their skills and employment experience. A number of individuals have found jobs as a direct result of our assistance. Also, we have referred some clients to the One-Stop Centers in Williamsburg and Hampton for a variety of services, including workshops, veterans career counseling and ex-felons services. In addition, we have made several referrals to the GED classes given through the Williamsburg-James City County Adult Education Program and to computer classes offered by the Williamsburg Regional Library. |
