Welcome to New Zion Baptist Church. We are a church family who seeks to be used by God so that lives are transformed through the power of Jesus Christ. We also endeavor to continue to grow spiritually, relationally, and in outreach and missions. New Zion members are guided by God’s Holy Word and His spirit .

We are actively involved in our local community as well as regional and  world missions.  We further seek to be a more diverse body as God uses  us in these times.

Sermon Recap

“He Came Back”
* Mark 16:14-18
*

~ Since Jesus came back…
I. There is work to do (VS 14&15)
He did not come back just to come back. He came so that we could feel and know His presence and to a certain degree guide us and help us just as He did in verse fourteen with the disciples. We now have the Holy Spirit so that we can know His presence and He can guide us and help us. However, most importantly, just like the disciples, we have work to do. The work or job is that we must get the message out to the entire world. That was the job of disciples in the context of the original passage, and that is the job of all disciples today. That job is not reserved for preachers, pastors, clergy or people who are considered ministers. All of us are ministers if we are believers of Jesus who is the Christ.

.

From The Prayer Ministry:

Good morning Father. Are we in Your will today Father? If we are lost please show us the way and place us on the right track as many times as You need to. We want to be in Your will and we know that Your will is the safest place for us. If we are blind Father please open our eyes. Help us to see the beauty and the good all around us. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.

Sermon Recap Continued...

~ Since Jesus came back…
II. People can believe and be saved (V 16)
We can believe. We can believe in Jesus. We can believe by faith in Him. Believing is so important to us being successful in life or failing in life. There is first the belief in Jesus. After we believe in Jesus, it can give us hope to believe other things. We can believe that we can make it in life. We can believe that no problem is bigger than our God. We can believe that our circumstances do not have to define our existence. We can believe that even though we may have had some setbacks and some failures, those things do not have to make us failures.

~ Since Jesus came back…
III. We can receive greater power (VS 17&18)
Verses 17 and 18 are about receiving greater power. Don’t get hung up on the examples. The emphasis here is in the Name that gives us greater power, which is a Name above any name. The examples included casting out demons in His name; speaking in new tongues or speaking languages that someone did not know or did not study; the examples included handling snakes and drinking poison and it does not bother the person who consumed it; the examples included laying hands on the sick and they recover.  Don’t get hung up on the examples. The emphasis here is in the name, because of the name of Jesus, who came back from death, we can receive greater power. This power is not to be understood only in the framework or the context of the unusual. The intent here is that the power can enable us to do things that we ordinarily could not do. The power cannot and should not be used or received in order that we would make ourselves great or put the spotlight on us.

Did You Know?

May 17 - Ascension Day

Ascension Day falls on the Thursday, exactly 40 days after Resurrection
Day (Easter). The name 'Ascension' comes from the accounts in the
Bible where it is mentioned that Jesus was taken up into heaven - He
ascended. On this day Christians celebrate the kingship of Jesus.

It is believed that during the 40 days following His resurrection, Jesus
appeared to many of his disciples and told them that He would always be
with them and promised them the gift of the Holy Spirit. After saying this,
Jesus was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of
God.

May 27 - Pentecost

What is the Feast of Pentecost?
The feast of Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the early church 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus. On that day the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to speak in the native languages of the various people of the Roman empire. People of all nations heard the gospel in their native tongues and were converted. (See the book of Acts 1-3)

Why is it called Pentecost?
Pentecost means, "50th day" It was originally a Jewish festival that came to be celebrated fifty days after Passover. Its purpose was twofold. The first was to give thanks to God for a harvest. The second purpose was to remember that God had created them as a people by setting them free from slavery in Egypt.

What does Pentecost mean for us today?
Pentecost has been called the birth of the Christian church. On this day the church's mission of bringing a "harvest of all people began. It also celebrates the Spirit's work in lives of God's people empowering us to live the Christian
life.

Red is the color of fire and so symbolizes the presence of God. It is also the liturgical color for Pentecost.
